Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has been linked with a move away from the club, and Atletico Madrid are hoping to sign him.

According to Fichajes, Diego Simeone has made a ‘direct request’ to the club to sign the 27-year-old South American defender before the Club World Cup begins on 15 June.

Romero has been outstanding for Tottenham in the Premier League, and he helped them win the UEFA Europa League final with a man-of-the-match performance against Manchester United. He is a world-class player who has proved himself for club and country.

Atletico Madrid want deal done quickly

It is no surprise that Atletico Madrid wants to secure his signature. They need to improve their defensive unit, and the World Cup winner would be an ideal acquisition.

Convincing the player to join the club will not be difficult. He will want to join a bigger club and for major trophies. There have been rumours that the player is interested in joining them.

It will be interesting to see if Atletico Madrid can secure an agreement with Tottenham in the coming weeks. Daniel Levy will not make it easy for the player to leave this summer. He is likely to demand a premium for Romero, and it remains to be seen whether the Spanish outfit are prepared to pay.

Tottenham need to replace Cristian Romero adequately

Losing the 27-year-old would be a huge blow for Tottenham. They have been quite vulnerable defensively, and selling their best player will only weaken them further. It remains to be seen whether they can replace him adequately during the summer transfer window.

Tottenham secured Champions League qualification for the next season, and that will certainly help them attract quality players. They need to get their transfer business right this summer in order to bounce back strongly next year. It has been a disappointing league campaign for them, and they have finished 17th in the table.
