'Worth the risk'- Chris Waddle urges Tottenham to gamble on electric Liverpool star; player primed for summer move

Tottenham might be tempted to look at Liverpool star Darwin Nunez in the summer

A slow start to the transfer window has raised a lot of concerns amongst Tottenham fans. Many expected the Europa League success to be a springboard for the Lilywhites to lure top players to N17. But it is safe to say that it has not quite worked out for the North London club yet.

Other clubs were already strengthening their squad in the early weeks of the summer while Spurs were sorting out their managerial situation. Now that Thomas Frank is appointed as the manager, Daniel Levy must do everything he can to back the Danish tactician to succeed at N17. The Lilywhites need to start by bringing in a new striker to compete with Dominic Solanke next season.

The England international admitted himself that he found life tough during the initial months at Hotspur Way. But it is fair to say that he found his feat in time and played a crucial role in helping Spurs win the Europa League. But his cover for the number nine position just did not get going under Big Ange. Richarlison fell down the pecking order and failed to stay fit for most parts of the season.

Tottenham should risk signing Liverpool star Darwin Nunez

There is a clear need for a new striker as Tottenham look to compete well in the Champions League and the Premier League. A good backup striker will also keep Dominic Solanke on his toes and provide cover if the England international needs to be rotated during the season. With Richarlison heading towards the exit doors, it is only right to bring in a replacement that would elevate the quality of the attack.

Club icon Chris Waddle has urged Spurs to look to Liverpool star Darwin Nunez for that role heading into next season. Speaking to OLBG.com, Waddle said,

“Would Darwin Nunez be another Timo Werner? Timo Werner didn’t have the drive or desire to succeed at Spurs, he looked a little in awe at being at the club, maybe questioning his own place in the team at times, he really lacked confidence.”

The Spurs icon added,

“I’m not sure what his future will be, I think with Darwin Nunez 95% of fans would be asking why, it would be a big gamble but it could come off. I think a loan deal would suit, for him to prove himself and Liverpool to have him off the wages, only time will tell. Maybe it’s worth the risk.”

Chris Waddle has urged Tottenham to ‘gamble’ on Liverpool star Darwin Nunez in the summer and sign him for next season. The club icon added that it will not end up being another ‘Timo Werner’ situation and the Uruguay international would be determined to prove his critics wrong. Waddle believes that the gamble could come off if the Lilywhites sign him on loan and give him a regular chance in the starting eleven.

The 26-year-old has not lived up to his expectations at Anfield and signing him would be a huge risk taken by Daniel Levy. Not only that, but the striker would find it tough to fit into Thomas Frank’s system at N17. The Danish tactician prefers his number nine to drop deep and link up play with the wingers. This is something that Nunez lacks in his game as he is a poacher and tends to get to the end of things.

The fans may also not be okay with the move as the Liverpool star has time and again showed that he needs several chances in a game to put the ball in the net. His inefficiency in front of goal is not something Spurs need right now as they look to build on the Europa League success next season. The only positive is that Darwin Nunez would work his socks off every game and give his all for the team week in week out.
