Manchester United are the most active team in the transfer market for a new midfielder, as a young star of the future to immediately upgrade on the horribly flopping Manuel Ugarte would be a transformative signing.
The Red Devils are close to set everywhere else. They overhauled their attack in the summer successfully, the defensive is passable, Senne Lammens is the upgrade they were looking for over Andre Onana in goal, and Bruno Fernandes is one heck of a playmaker.
If Manchester United can solve their midfield, including the wing back situation, they may be ready to return to competing in the top four of the Premier League.
One of their dream options is Brighton star Carlos Baleba, who, has meme lore would have it, is deliberately tanking his performances in order to facilitate a cheaper move to Old Trafford.
In all seriousness, Fabrizio Romano recently reported on his YouTube channel that Baleba “would love to move to United”. However, he did also state that Brighton do not want to sell the player just yet in the current January transfer window.
Manchester United are working hard and are in active talks with Carlos Baleba and his representatives, per Fab, but with Brighton still unwilling to sell such an important player – even despite his disappointing performances in 2025/26 – United must wait.
They expected to wait, though. Their other top transfer targets in midfield, Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson, are also not expected to move until the summer, so it will be some time and an agonizing wait until Man United can land their elite transfer targets of choice.
