Mason Melia pens emotional exit message to St Patrick’s Athletic as gears up to officially join Tottenham in January

Tottenham Hotspur have had problems scoring goals this season, and as such are targeting forwards in January to address it. While Spurs boast one of the best defensive records in the Premier League under Thomas Frank, they have had issues when it comes to creating and converting chances.

The Hotspur Way chiefs have started working behind the scenes to bolster the attacking department that’s been without James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke, but it is worth remembering that the club have already invested in a young striker and he is set to walk through the door in January.

After the end of the 2025 January transfer window, Tottenham officially announced the signing of Mason Melia from St Patrick Athletic for a fee of £1.6m deal plus add-ons. However, due to Brexit rules, he could not join the north Londoners immediately as he was 17 back then. Having turned 18 in September, he will officially arrive at the club in January 2026.

Mason Melia is one of the biggest young talents in Irish football and won the PFA Ireland Young Player of the Year award last year. Despite his tender age, the striker has already played 98 times for St Patrick Athletic, scoring 25 and recording eight assists.

Tottenham set to welcome Mason Melia in January

Melia played the full 90 minutes in St Patrick Athletic’s final game of the season at the weekend, which ended in a 0-0 draw at Shelbourne. He finished the campaign for the Irish club with 13 goals and four assists from 35 games. On Thursday, the teenager penned an emotional exit message on social media to his current club, ahead of a January switch to Tottenham.

Spurs had to fend off interest from a plethora of clubs across Europe to secure Melia’s signature earlier this year. It was reported back in July that Tottenham have put the young attacker in a tailored conditioning programme to prepare him for the pace, physicality and intensity of the Premier League.

There is plenty of buzz around Melia and he has gained considerable experience ahead of his much-awaited move to the Premier League. He perhaps chose the north London club over others due to their faith and nurturing of young talents in recent years, having seen the likes of Destiny Udogie, Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, Mathys Tel, Wilson Odobert and academy products get opportunities to express themselves in the first team.

Ange Postecoglou was the man in charge of Tottenham when Melia was signed, so it will be interesting to know Thomas Frank’s plans with the Under-21 Republic of Ireland international. Only time will tell whether the exciting forward is immediately integrated in the first team or farmed out on loan to get some experience in the English league.
