With injuries and departures leaving Michael Carrick short of experienced options, the club have continued to explore the market for proven Premier League quality.

A new name has now moved to the top of United’s shortlist.

Manchester United are in advanced talks to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, as reported by The Athletic.

The Belgian international has emerged as United’s latest priority after the club decided to shelve a move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, opening the door for negotiations to accelerate.

Talks are understood to be ongoing between all parties as the Red Devils attempt to finalise a deal for the experienced midfielder.

Despite attracting interest from elsewhere, Youri Tielemans is believed to favour a switch to Old Trafford.

The 29-year-old remains under contract with Aston Villa until June 2028 after joining the Midlands club on a free transfer from Leicester City in the summer of 2023.

Tielemans enjoyed an outstanding 2025/26 campaign, playing a key role as Villa secured Champions League qualification while also lifting the UEFA Europa League.

Across 35 appearances in all competitions, he contributed 2 goals and 7 assist.

His impressive form carried over onto the international stage.

Tielemans captained Belgium during their run to the World Cup quarter-finals and scored twice in their dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Senegal in the Round of 32.

However, he was unable to feature in Belgium’s defeat to Spain after suffering an injury during the warm-up before kick-off.

Manchester United’s desire to add another midfielder comes after Casemiro’s departure left a significant gap in the squad.

That need became even greater when Manuel Ugarte sustained knee ligament damage while representing Uruguay during the World Cup group stage.

United have already completed the signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea in a deal worth £48 million, with a further £2 million in performance-related bonuses.

Now, with Ederson no longer their immediate focus, the club are pushing to secure Tielemans as another major addition before the new campaign begins.
