Zlatan Ibrahimovic Delivers Honest Take on Brazil vs. Japan

Brazil walks into its Round of 32 matchup against Japan as the clear favorite on paper, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic doesn't see this one as a simple checkbox before the next round.

With Raphinha sidelined and Neymar still working his way back from injury, Brazil's margin for error looks thinner than usual, and that's exactly what has Ibra's attention ahead of kickoff.

Japan finished second in Group F, drawing the Netherlands and Sweden before steamrolling Tunisia 4-0. That run came on the back of tight defensive structure and quick transitions through players like Daichi Kamada, Ritsu Doan and Ayase Ueda, the kind of attacking trio that can turn one mistake into a goal in seconds.

Ibrahimovic Explains Why Japan Has His Attention

It's that identity that has Ibrahimovic genuinely intrigued, and he made his stance clear before the match.

"If there is one Round of 32 match I'm genuinely excited to watch, it's Brazil vs Japan and not because of Brazil. It's because of Japan," Ibra said via World Cup 2026 on X. "I've watched every one of their games in this tournament, and you know how much I admire the way they play. Their organization, their defending, their attacking football and especially their manager have all been outstanding."

Neymar returned from his calf injury in Brazil's final group game against Scotland but still isn't expected to start. Carlo Ancelotti is likely to bring him in as a substitute, with his minutes shaped by how the match unfolds.

That leaves more weight on Vinicius Junior to create, and on Brazil's midfield to find a rhythm against a Japan side built to disrupt exactly that. Ibrahimovic doesn't think Brazil should treat this as an easy night, even with the talent gap on paper.

"Everyone expects Brazil to dominate, and they may well win because of the quality they have, but it won't be easy," he added. "I'm more interested in seeing what Japan has prepared. I want to see the ideas, the courage and the tactical plan they bring against one of the biggest teams in world football. That's what makes this game so fascinating."

What Brazil Could Face in the Knockout Round

With Raphinha out, Brazil is expected to stick with its 4-3-3, handing Rayan a start on the right wing. Casemiro, Bruno Guimaraes and Lucas Paqueta will carry the midfield workload while trying to play through Japan's aggressive press.

Marquinhos and Gabriel Magalhaes need to stay sharp at the back against a team built to punish lapses on the counter. Ancelotti has reportedly prepared his squad for every scenario, extra time and penalties included.

Brazil remains the favorite, but Japan has made a habit of complicating things for bigger nations. If Brazil holds its defensive shape and handles the pressure, it should advance. If not, the Samurai Blue have the pieces to pull off one of the tournament's biggest upsets.
