Drawing the Norman Regional as your destination for the first round of the NCAA Softball Tournament isn’t a guaranteed one-and-done, but it’s been pretty close to that in recent years.
The Sooners have appeared in every NCAA Tournament since Patty Gasso took over as the program’s head coach, and have advanced to Super Regional weekend in every season dating back to 2009. Additionally, they’ve won six of the previous eight national championships, including each of the last four titles.
So, drawing OU in the first round hasn’t exactly been the best outcome for teams hoping to make it to Oklahoma City, and on Sunday, we saw it written all over the faces of the Boston Terriers.

Boston (39-17) won its third consecutive conference title this past weekend after rallying to take down top-seeded Army in the Patriot League Tournament on Sunday. The Terriers have been one of the most consistent winners in the country under 10th-year head coach Ashley Waters, who has led BU to seven PL Championships during her tenure.
Unfortunately, Boston knows all too well how difficult it is to advance out of Norman, as they were tasked with the exact same feat a season ago.
Last year, after going 52-4-1 before the NCAA Tournament, BU landed as the No. 3 seed in the Norman Regional. Interestingly, they avoided playing Oklahoma there, as they dropped their first game against Oregon (0-8, F/5) and then avoided elimination with an 8-0 win over Cleveland State. They were ultimately eliminated by Oregon later in the day, with an 8-2 loss that ended their season.
This time around, though, the Terriers are the No. 4 seed in the regional, which means they get the pleasure of opening up their tournament against the host team, Oklahoma.
The Sooners and Terriers are scheduled for first pitch on Friday at 5:00 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
