The Outer Banks has been hit hard this hurricane season.

Most recently, multiple homes along the North Carolina chain of barrier islands have fallen into the ocean, while being battered by swell from Hurricanes Imelda and Humberto. Five homes collapsed within 45 minutes on Tuesday.

Local OBX surfer Brett Barley shared video, and thoughts, on the situation to his social media. See the tragic scenes below.

“5 Houses Fell Into the Ocean Today in Buxton, NC due to Swell from Hurricane Humberto...” Barley captioned. “I have so many words to say, and yet so few at the same time. Mainly, it’s just heavy to watch a town you grew up in look like this, while knowing how much beautiful beach and vegetation use to lie between these homes and the ocean.”

Per an announcement from the Cape Hatteras National Seashore:

"Five unoccupied houses collapse in Buxton; very hazardous conditions are expected to continue over the next 24 hours and visitors should stay away from closed areas...The collapses occurred between approximately 2 and 2:45 p.m. The Seashore is not aware of any bodily injuries associated with the five house collapses."

It just so happens that Barley, and his 13-year-old ripper of son Masen, were with the SURFER Mag team over the weekend, ripping donuts in Chevy trucks and waves at the Palm Springs Surf Club. (More on that later.)

Barley commented on the situation in the Outer Banks, discussing the difficulties of driving home while navigating the tides, and also the impact hurricanes have on the community where he grew up. Which is all to say, it’s tough. On one hand, this is Barley’s home, and he loves it; on the other, the coastal infrastructure (or lack thereof) can be frustrating.

But like Barley said in his previous, highly-detailed and informational vlog after Hurricane Erin:

“This place is wild, it’s fragile. It always has been. So, if you live here, it’s just one of the things that you accept. The beauty of this place is worth enduring all of those storms. I’m never going anywhere.”

Our thoughts go out to the fine people of OBX.
