A tragedy struck in late August on the famed shores of Rincon Beach.
It was August 31st, when 5-year-old Maxwell Haworth was playing on the rocks that line the coast along California’s premier righthand pointbreak, affectionately known as the “Queen of the Coast.” And suddenly, a simple beach day turned devastating.
The young boy slipped on a rock, dislodging another, resulting in another rock to fall on top of him. Tragically, Haworth died from the incident.
According to a GoFundMe account, organized by close friends of the family, to raise donations for the grieving parents:
“My beloved brother and his soul mate lost their 5 year old boy on August 31, 2025 at Rincon Beach in Ventura, CA. While standing on rocks behind the beach near the sand with his best friend, one dislodged and caused a rock above it to fall, all unfolding in front of his parents and friends eyes. Maxwell succumbed to his injuries.”
It’s tough to put in words how terrible such a loss would be.
While speaking to the LA Times, close family member Daniel Kessler said: “His father picked him up and went up to the parking lot with him in his arms to get some help. They did everything they could.”
Kessler added: “He was always a joyful, energetic 5-year-old and always having fun, loved everybody. He had just actually started kindergarten a couple of weeks ago. The family’s just heartbroken that they’re not going to see him grow up.”
In less than a week, news of the heartbreak spread far and wide, and the GoFundMe reached over $50k. As of publish time, it’s less than $12,000 away from its $80k goal.
Regarding the inundation of help, Kessler noted: “The outpouring of support has been tremendous, we feel so blessed and his parents feel so blessed and can’t thank people enough for donating and sharing their love. They feel overjoyed that their son has touched so many people.”
Rest in peace to young Maxwell, and huge condolences to the family.
