Harder, better, faster, stronger.
The booming business of wave pools – manmade lagoons propelling surfing into a synthetic future – is taking a cue from Daft Punk in terms of technology. As the modern wave pool industry trudges forward, the pools are getting bigger and better.
Case and point: The latest offering from wave pool behemoth, Wavegarden, dubbed Surf Farm, coming to Australia’s Sunshine Coast in 2028. It’s backed by world champion Joel Parkinson, features a 10-hectare floorplan (half the size of Grand Central Station), a $60 million price tag, and an update on the wave-making tech. Take a peek below.
Speaking with the Sunshine Coast News, Parko said:
“The Wavegarden Cove technology delivers incredibly high-quality, repeatable waves, and implementing the full 62-module configuration means this will be the most advanced Wavegarden set-up on the east coast of Australia.
“It’s a game-changing project for the region, it’s a place where beginners, families and elite surfers can all share the same world-class environment.”
Surf Farm is also not the only wave pool coming to the region, and also, not the only one backed by a legendary world champion Aussie surfer. One of Parko’s best mates, and most bitter rivals, Mick Fanning, is backing a separate pool headed for the Gold Coast of Australia. That one, however, will feature Endless Surf technology.
The rivalry continues?
But back to the Surf Farm joint on the Sunshine Coast. Per Wavegarden:
“The Surf Farm will feature a 62-module Wavegarden Cove. This setup enables the widest possible range of programmable wave settings, accommodating surfers of all levels, from beginners to elite athletes. It will also be the largest Wavegarden installation on Australia’s east coast, setting a new benchmark for surf park performance in the region.”
