Spain is ground-zero for one of the world’s leading wave pool technologies.

Wavegarden, the surf park behemoth behind some of the world’s most popular and prominent manmade wave operations, is based out of the Basque Country.

And their tech is soon to be utilized in what’s being touted as “the largest wave pool in Europe,” Gemswell Surf Madrid, eyeing a grand opening in 2027.

Per Wave Pool Mag:

“Madrid is set to add a large-scale artificial wave facility with the planned development of Gemswell Surf Madrid wave pool, a surf park scheduled to open in spring 2027. The project, backed by Stoneweg, Teras Capital and Atlético de Madrid, represents an investment of more than €60 million [$70 million] and will be located within the Atlético de Madrid Sports City, approximately 15 minutes from the city center and 10 minutes from Madrid-Barajas Airport.

“The facility will include a 23,000 square meter surf lagoon using Wavegarden technology. Surf sessions will be limited to 60 minutes and segmented by skill level. The total capacity is set at 120 surfers per session, with up to 40 in the reef zone and 80 in the bay zone.”

The latest from Gemswell, seen above, shows the machinery moving, trucks pushing dirt, and the vision becoming a reality. In their “construction diaries,” they noted: “We move forward with the cementing of the base of the wave machine and the building that will host, among other spaces, the Surf Academy. Every day, a step closer to the water.”

As for the size of the Wavegarden Cove facility, it will clock in at a whopping 23,000 square meters. That’s about two city blocks in Manhattan, for comparison, per obscure sizing website The Measure of Things, or about three-quarters of the Lincoln Memorial.

And with regards to the bells and whistles, this pool is set to have it all, including “four infinity pools, a 700 square meter area for board sports activities, and outdoor recreational facilities such as volleyball courts and balance training areas. A multi-use indoor space will host activities including yoga, pilates and functional training.”

Stay tuned; Madrid is about to be pumping.
