Based on the 1987 cult classic "North Shore," one would assume that Arizona's been churning out surf champs in wave pools for decades, but Rick Kane's chlorine-to-salt-water evolution is, in fact, simply the stuff of Hollywood. The fact of the business is that the Grand Canyon State just got its first wave pool. Revel Surf at Cannon Beach, with wave-making capabilities powered by Swell MFG, is now officially open to the public.

Located in Mesa, Arizona, Cannon Beach is described by its developers as a "37-acre, $280-million 'retail and entertainment complex anchored by a surfing lagoon."

"The eventual vision of the park is to have a 115-room hotel, gym, multiple restaurants, and an indoor action sports center," continues the description.

The primary swell-making technology at Cannon Beach is a result of a collaboration between engineer John Bushey and former world title contender Shane Beschen. Along with executive director Matthew Gunn, they operate Swell MFG. The surf park also features a UNIT Surf Pool that’s best described as an “endless” standing wave. This is the only location on the planet that features both technologies side by side.

The rates listed start with a beginner session at $119, while the more performance oriented waves are $139 a session. There are also a private booking option for groups looking to take the joint over, as well as a membership opportunity.

A similar development is planned for McKinny, Texas, which will feature the same wave-making tech, along with a hotel and other entertainment options.
