Nazaré is not to be trifled with.
Sure, there are the claims that the wave is one giant mushburger, and therefore not as heavy as other XXL spots like Jaws or Maverick’s or wherever.
But still, the supercharged canyon outside of Portugal’s Praia do Norte creates a freak-of-nature wave, pushing peaks higher than anywhere else in the world, creating a minefield for surfers to navigate as bombs detonate across the vast playing field. And yet, there’s those who still toy with the Portuguese beast. Like this crew on a SUPsquatch:
The posse is comprised of big wave hellman Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca, heavy water bodysurfer Kalani Lattanzi, charger Pato Teixeira, charger Pedro Calado, and master of various crafts Stephan Figueiredo. They were whipped into the wave by jet ski driver, Sergio Cosmico.
As reposted by big wave documentarian, Tim Bonython, this must’ve been from a past season, as the North Atlantic has yet to wake up from its summer slumber.
Bonython captioned the clip: “PARTY WAVE - One of my more successful reels where we have Nazare’s best, out run the beast.”
The five men pile onto the oversized SUP, then get towed into what has to be about a 40-foot face – a modest-sized wave for Nazaré. They successfully make it down the crest of the wave, navigating a few bumps along the way. But ultimately, the wall of whitewater catches up to them, and they get swallowed. Fun while it lasted.
Not that there’s any precedence for this, but this might just be the biggest wave ever ridden on a SUPsquatch. Any other contenders?
Well, earlier this year, Jamie O’Brien and friends took on a 15-footer at Sunset Beach with a SUPsquatch. But this Nazaré wave takes the cake.
Regardless of the nonexistent accolades, the good news is: everyone’s okay.
