Bruce Irons stole my leash.

Well, he borrowed it. But I had to borrow it back while nobody was looking, unstrapping the velcro, which was still attached to his board, and lay was resting after hours of surfing, being put through the paces from one of the best to ever do it and, at one time, perhaps even still, pretty much everyone’s favorite surfer. But if Bruce needed a leash, I was happy to oblige.

The Kauaian kicked back in a cabana, lounging poolside. Salt-rimmed drink in hand, dark sunglasses wrapped around his dome, his posse vibing to techno around him, and a sly smirk on his mug. Bruce glanced at the impossibly turquoise waves breaking beneath a scorched mountain, smack dab in the California desert. “It’s lavish, it’s bougie, and it’s a dope wave,” he mused.

It was just one of many, many moments throughout weekend one of the Goldenvoice Surf Club, a Coachella-adjacent pool party and surf event, hosted at the Palm Springs Surf Club, and presented by SURFER. We were on the ground, in the trenches, and witness to all the action. Maybe it was the unrelenting sun, the desensitizing activity, the drinks flowing, the constant thumping bass…but the weekend was somewhat of a blur. A haze of high-fives, smiles, high-performance surfing, partying, sunburns, tubes, airs, hacks, waterslides, lazy rivers, dancing, and good times.

Was that snowboarder Judd Henkes crowd surfing – literally – his way to the stage? Yep.
