Outrigger canoe surfing is an ancient Hawaiian tradition.
And still to this day, there are many who carry on that historic practice, piling into a canoe, and catching waves. But sometimes, things don’t go according to plan.
Like the following clip, showing an entire family getting absolutely wrecked while outrigger canoe surfing in Hawaii, sending a few to the hospital. Check it out below.
“Just went canoe surfing with my Ohana,” Brandi-Chanel Machado, a radio host, wellness influencer, and mother narrates. “We almost died.”
The crew in the boat – filled with Machado, her sister, her brother, sister-in-law, and 60-year-old mother – takes a wave all the way to the shore. And that’s where trouble strikes. The boat digs a rail, turns sideways, then gets flipped into the shorebreak.
Carnage. Mayhem. Serious beatdown.
Machado wrote: “King tide canoe surf sesh —wipeout edition. For the record, my family has been doing this for well over half a century. Everyone is okay and can’t wait to get back out. Mother Nature is always in control, and anyone who takes a canoe into surf knows there’s a high chance for wipeouts. All in all, some hard falls and even harder laughs (now that we know everyone is alive).
The 60-year-old mother suffered three broken ribs, a torn meniscus, and wore a neck brace when leaving the hospital. And yet, according to Machado: “She said as soon as she gets a new canoe, she’s taking it out.”
Her sister left the hospital in a wheelchair; however: “My sister said it was the most fun wave ride ever.”
Before the wipeout, Machado and her family caught some decent waves – mostly on the outside, away from the shorebreak shenanigans. Machado added:
“It wasn’t all battle scars. Me and my family love playing on the ocean. We had some good ones.”
Sounds like this minor setback won’t stop the Machado Ohana from paddling back out.
