Bordering the English Channel, which connects the United Kingdom from France, there’s a picturesque coastline along Dorset County, dubbed the Jurassic Coast.

It’s a World Heritage Site, home to nearly 200 million years of geological history, spanning through the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods – hence the name.

And with those ancient rock formations, there’s stunning cliffs, intricate rock formations, archways, and an ever-changing environmental landscape. As for the latter, that means the occasional cliff collapse. Like recently, when a group of visitors miraculously avoided being smashed by a large chunk of cliffside collapsing to the beach below.

Per the BBC:

“A visitor has called it ‘a miracle’ no-one was hurt when a section of cliff collapsed on to a beach on Dorset's Jurassic Coast.

“Suzanne Sears, from Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire, was taking a walk near West Bay when she heard "a deep cracking noise" coming from the cliffs before the rockfall shortly after 16:00 GMT on Tuesday.

“The Maritime and Coastguard Agency confirmed a rescue team was sent to a report of a cliff fall at West Bay and ‘no one was found to be in distress.’”

While this zone isn’t necessarily one of England’s premier surf regions – on account of the geography, and the limited swell seeping into the small channel area – on the other side of the island’s southwestern tip, spots like Croyde, Cornwall, Newquay, etc. provide some of the country’s best waves.

It’s also not the first time that cliffs have dramatically fallen in the Dorset region – not even close. Last year, a large section of the bluff collapsed as well.

Per local news: “A famous cliff in East Devon has collapsed again, with locals and visitors describing rocks as big as cars tumbling onto the beach below. Vicky Walkley, a coastal scientist from Exmouth, was enjoying the view when she heard a loud rumble. She looked down to see the well-known red cliff crumbling onto the beach.”
