Over the weekend, during the Toes in the Cove longboard contest at Rincon, the real locals made an appearance, and showed the competitors what’s up.

A pod of dolphins infiltrated the famed California lineup, shared some waves with the competitors, launched a few airs, and gave quite the show for everyone involved. No interference calls necessary; these were welcomed party waves.

Check out the clip below.

One of the big-name competitors in the contest was Santa Barbara local, and former Championship Tour surfer, Conner Coffin. Regarding his connection with the Queen of the Coast, Coffin explained:

“For me, Rincon just means like…pretty much my whole surfing life started right here. Just surfing in the cove on days like this. It’s such a dreamy wave and rad community. It’s so fun to be here. This and the Rincon Classic are just super fun, special events. I’m really stoked to be a part of it.”

After the dolphin sighting, Coffin commented:

“What an epic day!”

It’s not the first time that a posse of porpoises showed up at the Queen of the Coast, either. They’re actually quite a common occurrence, according to locals. A few years back, the ultimate party wave went down (and went viral) at the legendary righthand pointbreak with a few surfers, a dude on a surf mat, and a couple dolphins sharing a wave. Regarding that instance, Andrew Buck, a Rincon local and the surf mat rider, said:

“Honestly, at the time it seemed It was just another wave. Dolphins often steal the show at Rincon. Surf here enough and you’ve seen them do what that video shows. I guess they appreciate pointbreaks as much as surfers do. Lastly, the massive amount of views for this wave when posted to Instagram suggests the masses appreciate seeing nature awe us way more than tubes, airs, hang tens, etc. And, these sights are regular -- so if you loved the video, put your phone down, go outside and walk and immerse yourself in nature.”
