Since its inception in 1999, JS Industries has set its sights on the pointy end of high-performance surfboards. It wasn’t until 2019, six years ago, that Jason Stevenson released the brand’s first twin fin, the OG Black Baron.

JS tells us this black-railed twin fin gets more inquiries than any other Traktor in the range. It’s easy to see why. The flat deck, level rocker and the two-fin engine means easy speed in mediocre surf. Ryan Callinan, Luke Egan, Conner Coffin and 2012 world champ Joel Parkinson reach for this thing in small surf. “It surfs alright,” Joel said with a cheeky grin.

Back by popular demand, Jason has updated the Black Baron with a few key tweaks based on the team’s R&D. The new features include a subtle hip in the tail for a little extra release. But the most noticeable difference is the fin placement. JS hauled the fin plugs back to give the board a touch more drive and control. The barage of frontside wraps above (plus Conner's backhand) is a welcome testament.

“Anything shoulder high or under, it’s amazing,” Joel said. “Give it glassy walls and it comes into its own. With the twin-fin feel, you’ll always have speed, especially on a waist-high wave.”

A suggestion for those stepping on a twin for the first time or developing their two-keeled approach: Get a fin that counterbalances the attributes of the board. For a loose and skatey twin fin board like the Black Baron, use a fin that’s stiff and stable. Look for fiberglass and rake. Those attributes will settle the board down in the water and control its speed. At that point, just hang on and enjoy the ride.
