For surfers and swimmers alike, sharks make the most noise when it comes to fear of what’s lurking below. Whether it’s from Hollywood, media, or some innate terror within, sharks spark dread unlike almost anything else in the ocean – despite the stats on attacks not supporting such trepidation.
You’ve probably heard the comparisons. Things like…you’re more likely to get struck by lightning than get attacked by a shark; bees are deadlier than sharks; fireworks kill more people annually than shark attacks; et al.
Well, here’s another one to add to the list: On average, sharks are responsible for five or six human deaths each year, whereas crocodiles account for 1,000 casualties per annum.
Diving into the dangers of crocs, specifically when it comes to popular surfing destinations, surf vlogger Dan Harmon compiled the above list. Will it make you reconsider your next surf trip? That’s on you. But food for thought, here’s a handful of the world’s most croc-infested surf spots:
Costa Rica
A perennially popular surf destination, also teeming with crocodiles in close proximity to some of the country’s marquee waves, Costa Rica is a croc haven. Not to mention, in 2016, an American tourist was viciously attacked by a croc while surfing in Tamarindo. “When it comes to croc hotspots in Costa Rica, Playa Grande and Playa Hermosa are some of the most notorious areas,” says Harmon.
Indonesia
Recently, per a video shared by boat captain and Mentawai surfing explorer Martin Daly, a croc was seen perusing some of the world’s most iconic surf spots. And it’s nothing new; there’s precedent for that. “Indonesia is the go-to surf destination, but it’s also one of the most dangerous places in the world for crocodiles,” says Harmon. “Most notably, the saltwater crocodile.”
Sri Lanka
Not necessarily known for heavy swell, but a tropical paradise with warm water and friendly waves, Sri Lanka has been on the rise as a surf destination. But the crocodile situation is something to contend with. And particularly at some of the island nation’s most popular surf spots. “One of the highest risk areas for crocodiles in Sri Lanka is the famous Arugam Bay,” says Harmon. “It’s in this area that these reptiles frequently move between freshwater lagoons and the ocean.”
