Earlier this week, Hurricane Priscilla spun off the shores of Mexico, churning up wind and waves, and sending that energy towards certain coastlines.
By Tuesday, the storm neared major hurricane status, but by Wednesday, it was downgraded to a Category 1 storm. Later, it weakened even more into a Tropical Storm, as it continued its path into the eastern Pacific Ocean near the Baja Peninsula.
However, during its peak, the storm brought waves and flooding to areas of Mexico – like Puerto Vallarta, as seen in the video below.
The video comes from Tuesday, October 7th, and was filmed at Buenaventura Grand Hotel, a beachfront resort just south of the mainland Mexico’s town center. It shows large waves pummeling the coastline, even making their way onto the hotel property and flooding into the pool and recreational areas, as guests watched from balconies.
On October 7th, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico issued this warning:
“Extremely hazardous conditions will continue out at sea creating significant waves and riptides along the Pacific coast. Similar conditions have previously resulted in deadly rip currents and rogue waves that claimed the lives of multiple U.S. citizens. Travelers should avoid entering the water or walking on beaches during dangerous conditions, heed warnings from authorities, and monitor official weather updates closely.”
Elsewhere, parts of Mexico saw more swell from Priscilla – short-period, near-perfect, yet still chaotic reeling lefthanders mimicking a less-mechanical Skeleton Bay. Check out the clip below:
As for the visitors in Puerto Vallarta, the waves were so intense that hotel staff issued a statement, which read:
“We would like to inform you that, due to the natural phenomenon currently located near the Pacific coast, we experienced high tides and strong waves during the early hours of October 7. It is important to emphasize that all our guests and staff members are safe, and the hotel’s main facilities have not been affected.
“Thanks to the preventative measures implemented and the prompt response of our team, no evacuations were necessary.”
