The other day whilst scrolling through the endless barrage of my Instagram feed my attention was caught by Kai Lenny's Pre-Surf Mobility Warm Up Routine. As someone who is always keen to check out a new routine, I watched as he performed a series of movements that ranged from Starfish to Egg Rolls to High-to-Low Double Foot Hops.
Upon viewing, I noticed something peculiar about the other fitness enthusiasts in the gym with him, honestly, it was hard not to as they were often only a few feet apart. The peculiar thing was that they all looked to be about twice Kai's age--esteemed elders alongside one of the greatest watermen to ever live.
On second thought, maybe it isn't strange at all, it may just be wise AF. I recently heard that spending time with people outside of your age range increases your neuroplasticity, as in, your brain's ability to reorganize its structure and connections in response to new experiences or heal itself from injury or disease. In our dazed and confused modern society, spending time with elders isn't exactly prioritized but in traditional societies elders were held in high esteem. They were revered, sought after, and valued for their life experience and hard-earned wisdom.
I wasn't the only one who noticed as the comment section of the post certainly had its fair share of remarks like, "I was waiting for Larry David to pop up in the background", and "Looks like plenty of uncles". To which Kai responded, "They're classic, the stories are next level "
I myself spent last winter living with a 72 year old on the North Shore and I'm with Kai on this one, the stories are truly next level. While most people are running around seeking instant gratification and consulting the Internet for their each and every need, our elders are untapped sources of inspiration and knowledge. They may not churn out answers as fast as ChatGPT but they'll give you far more than just a bulleted list of facts that you're likely to forget. Human to human storytelling is the bedrock of our very existence.
Other noteworthy, or better yet, laughable comments came from those trying to give the champ tips like, "…looks great but form on a few needs to be looked over. Where is the PT? Filming? He needs to be correcting! ;)"
Although I don't agree with Kai on his love for Taco Bell, whatever he is doing is clearly working as he remains in a class of his own when it comes to multi-sport talent and big wave ability. While most surfers are stoked on doing airs in wave pools, Kai is doing them on 60+ foot waves and working out with a crew that has an accrued wisdom of hundreds of years. Let's see what he and the rest of the Red Bull crew get up to in Ireland over the coming weeks. Spoiler alert, it's going to be big.
