In October of 2023, Halloween to be exact, a 13-year-old Bethany Hamilton was surfing at home in Kauai at a spot called Tunnels with her bestie, Alana Blanchard. That was when a 14-foot tiger shark attacked the young surfer, essentially ripping off her left arm.

Since then, Bethany has defied the odds, making a career for herself despite the hindrance, becoming a mother, an author, a motivational speaker, and even continuing to surf. And not just surf. Bethany straight up charges the heaviest waves in the world.

She’s an inspiration, no doubt. And now, taking to social media, she’s dispelling some of the rumors that have circulated surrounding the shark that attacked her.

First off, the shark that attacked her was killed. “While I was passive in this action,” she wrote, “I do know most of the local community was relived the shark that bit me was killed…It was cruising surf line ups for weeks! And yes I know we are in their environment…”

And then, she answered some questions that she’s received about the incident.

Someone asked: “Why did you kill the shark?”

She responded: “Imagine a 13-year-old girl, who just lost her arm to a shark, and then she goes and kills the shark somehow. That’d be pretty beast mode, honestly. Super beast mode. But that wasn’t the case. I have no clue. I was not involved. It wasn’t my choice. I was nothing in this situation. I was just in the hospital recovering. So, for people who have no common sense, I did not kill the shark.”

Additionally, in recent times, Bethany has been an advocate of the shark deterrent technology, Sharkbanz – those little ankle bracelets that allegedly send out electromagnetic fields to fend off sharks. On that front, Bethany mentioned:

“On the mention of shark safety, I do think the Sharkbanz is a great support to oppose shark culling! People can choose to use it for added safety or not! I think it’s a much better option than nets (that mess with other animals) and culling.”
