Big wave contests are inherently challenging to run. Getting a full day of maxing surf with pristine conditions is a tall order even at the most heralded of big-wave venues. Few have experienced this more than Gary Linden. The man behind many a historic big-wave contest, including the Big Wave World Tour that was in existence for a hot minute there, over the last few years, Linden has developed a new format that is considerably more efficient and effective. Enter the Thriller At Killers.

Now in year three, Linden's Thriller at Killers, which is held at Isla Todos Santos off the coast of Ensenada, Mexico, has perfected the format and ready to roll into the 2024/25 season ... if the West Coast ever sees more than a ripple again, what a dreadful fall it's been so far. Gripes about the lack of surf lately aside, all Linden and company need is about three hours of swell to make the magic happen.

Here's how the contest works ... oh, and in case you were wondering, you're invited to join the fray if you want. The Thriller At Killers kicks off with a video submission portion, which just opened on October 1. Looking for the best rides from the last season at Todos, all are welcome to submit their clips. The submission period will run through November 31.

Four men and two women will be selected from the digital qualification round to surf in the live main event at Todos Santo. Another four men and two women will we awarded wildcards. The draw will be rounded out by the top four men’s finishers and top two women’s finishers from the 2023 Thriller At Killers. In total, there will be 18 men and women in the main event.

Once the draw is confirmed in December, the waiting period for the live event will run from January 1 through February 28, 2025.

California’s Cody Purcell and Katie McConnell took the win in 2023 and will be back in 2024 to defend their titles. But they’ll have their work cut out for them. Already confirmed for the event are big wave world champions Greg Long and Paige Alms.

“I’ve been such a nerd about surfing and just love it so much. It just means a lot to me. It’s so great, what Gary’s doing. I can’t wait. I hope we all just get some great days out there this winter and get some great waves during the contest," said Purcell told SURFER.

The Thriller At Killers is run in partnership with the Punta Brava Golf and Surf Club in Ensenada, of which 11-time Kelly Slater will have a signature hole once the golf course is finally completed.

"I may have to spend more time down here," joked Slater last year at the awards ceremony.
