It’s the off-season for elite-level surfers, and a lengthy one at that.

The Championship Tour wrapped up with the last iteration of the Finals Day format in early September, at pumping Cloudbreak, with Yago Dora and Molly Picklum taking home their maiden world titles. Now, the surfers have six months off.

What’s a pro surfer to do with all that free time? For Italo Ferreira, he’s been spending a good chunk of it in chlorine, honing in new aerials at the São Paulo Surf Club. Like the one below, what he’s calling his “first 720°” – check it out:

Italo squares up against the section on his backhand, timing it carefully, then launching into the double-spin. After stomping it, his hands go to the air, his friends on the beach (pool deck?) go crazy. Rightfully so, as not many have pulled this off.

Most notably, Kelly Slater pulled one off on his frontside during a free-surf session in Portugal back in 2014. And Albee Layer – the aerialist, big wave innovator, and uninhibited Maui surf critic – has been stomping these for years, in all different iterations.

Then, there’s the ongoing debate on what to call these aerials – 540, 720, double-spin, whatever. But no need to get into the weeds with that here. It is what it is.

Earlier, Italo also landed another freakish maneuver at the São Paulo Surf Club – a backflip. And it’s all thanks to the pool’s PerfectSwell-patented “McFly” section. When SURFER recently caught up with PerfectSwell® Brand Manager, Rob Kelly, he explained:

“For the McFly, we noticed a trend in the waves that have produced some of the loftiest airs done in the ocean, and prior to going to SPSC, we discussed the idea of creating a new ramp that would allow for the biggest airs done in the pool.”

Question is: Will these airs stay in the pool, or will Italo bring them to competition in 2026.

Stay tuned to find out.
