Over 10 years ago, sometime in 2015, I found myself in a private screening theater in downtown Los Angeles. The movie was View From a Blue Moon, a documentary of sorts, starring John John Florence and directed by Blake Vincent Kueny.
At the time, I thought it was the peak of surf cinema. And it still holds up today.
But today, things have changed. Practically every high-profile surfer has their own YouTube channel, and released vlogs regularly – sometimes featuring surfing, a lot of the times highlighting everyday life. But John John still does things differently. Hence, his new series, Vela, and episode one, “Edge of the Ocean,” which just dropped:
Watch the full video here; the caption reads:
“I think the one thing I didn't anticipate on this trip was the patience I would need. What you don't see is how challenging it really is to sail somewhere and hide out for days from rough weather and then you have to find a safe anchorage, be somewhat comfortable as a family, and line all that up with a good swell and wind. But when it all comes together and you're alone surfing perfect waves, it's just crazy. It's hard to describe how good that feels after all the work that goes into it.”
The short film follows Florence and his young family: wife, Lauryn and son, Darwin. They sail through the South Pacific, navigating storms, exploring untouched islands, and of course, seeking out rarely surfed (if ever) waves. One, in particular, a pitching lefthander, which we’ve seen small glimpses of before. It’s akin to a Cloudbreak lookalike, only shorter and steeper on the tube section – not much of an easy roll-in.
Anytime John John surfs, the world stops to watch. But this is something different; this isn’t a polished opus like View From a Blue Moon. It’s a look inside the modern surf adventurer, who happens to also be (arguably) the world’s best surfer.
All the more reason to tune in; stay tuned for more episodes of Vela.
