Mason Ho ain’t afraid of backwash. Remember his full send into the shorebreak at the 2024 Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational? He and his gun were launched 20 feet into the air. So what’s a smaller side-wash right between friends?

Mason said he’d been dreaming of tackling this oddball in Puerto Rico for a long time. He finally checked it off the bucket list at the invitation of Dylan Graves, Weird Waves conessuir, who has used the undulating right near his home to great effect throughout his career, from eye-popping videos to wallpaper-worthy images.

It’s an intricate puzzle, this one. Paddling parallel to the cliff to catch the right-bound side-wonk, staying on the wave while dodging the explosion at the convergence, then changing tack to glide into what is essentially an entirely new wave, which others a playful barrel or section to slap…there’s a lot to process in just a few seconds.

For a surfer as creative and capable as Mason, this is a canvas that keeps him on his toes, heals and back again. In the first few seconds of this video, you can see his head spinning with possibilities. Of course, he's going to try a chop-hop on it. Compared to Waimea Bay whitewater, it's much more tame. Though the thumbnail begs to differ.

Mason opts for a 5’6” Mini Driver by …Lost Surfboards while Dylan grabs a 5’9” Haydenshapes Systm. Both fared well. Compared to Waimea Bay, it's chill. If you happened to come across hydrodynamics like this, what would you ride?
