Though you’d never know it, the overhead hyper-blue barrels in the video below are not the best waves from Team Snapt’s 2025 Da Hui Backdoor Shootout performance. In accordance with the Snapt5 director Logan Dulien’s wishes, all the footage in the upcoming film (release date TBD) will be on lock until its debut. That means no Instagram posts and no YouTube videos beforehand. Put waves on ice, and they'll be hot off the press.
But Mason Ho, Benji Brand, Clay Marzo, Parker Coffin and Josh Moniz still got a heaping of remarkable rides during their heats at the Shootout last month. The Snapt stars have been major players in the event over the past four years. They won the team and individual titles in 2022 and 2023 (Mason and Benji were the top dawgs, respectively). In 2024, they were team and individual runner-ups. Last month, Team Japan pulled off a massive win in proper flexing conditions to take the team title. But Team Snapt went down swinging and blasting Hendrix.
One thing this video does very well is to underscore how differently each surfer sets up for a lefthand tube. They approach it in a unique way. Mason, of course, breaks convention by grabbing his outside rail with his inside hand, reaching across his body while in the tube like some high-stakes yoga pose. With Clay, he employs the same nonchalantness on an 8-footer that he does on a 4-footer. Parker opts for a big board and uses that longer rail to generate lots of speed from the jump. Benji subtly gets low over his board and squares his shoulders to steer himself out of the deepest possible section. And Josh has the quintessential modern pigdog technique on lock, using it to great effect to get the last wave of the clip.
Different strokes, same results — Blown out of psycho barrels while Hendrix plays on.
