The Surf Ranch, a feat of engineering in the manmade wave pool space, is the go-to location for celebrities to get their synthetic surfing fix. And the man who guides them on their quest to conquer the Lemoore, California wave machine is Raimana Van Bastolaer, surf coach to the stars.
Raimana’s latest victim, or, student? Matthew McConaughey.
Watch below, as Raimana tees up McConaughey via jet ski, places him in position for the wave, barks orders at the A-lister, and almost, so close, gets the actor in the elusive, fabled Surf Ranch tube.
A couple more visits to the Ranch, and maybe McConaughey (a goofyfoot!) would have the thing dialed. But not quite yet; maybe a few more reps, and studying Gerry Lopez would do the trick.
It’s not McConaughey’s first foray into the liquid gauntlet that is the Surf Ranch. Last year, the actor was seen bogging on a right, which was later swooped up by none other than John John Florence. The clip was captured by WSL commentator Strider Wasilewski, who captioned the star-studded snaking event as such: “Bingo Bango Surf Ranch Tango…. Let the good times roll!”
Nor is this McConaughey’s first dip of the toes into the surf world at large. Famously, during Griffin Colapinto’s 2023 run at the World Title, the actor got behind the Californian surfer, narrating a pre-Finals Day pump-up video: “When you need an 8.89 to decide the World Title and you surf your way to a 9,” his southern drawl rang out. “You gotta stay tuned to that music as well. It is no accident you are here right now. A roof is a manmade thing, Griff. And you have no lid. So, fly.”
That year, Griff got third; Filipe Toledo won.
But still, McConaughey’s fascination – and participation – with surfing seems strong. Will we see more cameos (perhaps, eventually, a Surf Ranch tube) on this season’s World Tour? Stay tuned.
