A group of kids, perhaps teenagers, frolic on the shore with stormy seas in the background. Then, multiple large waves – looking more like mountains of water – pummel the rocks, sending whitewater cascading over the natural pool, sweeping the kids up the beach.
That’s the scene in a recent video captured on Monday, February 9th from Puerto Nuevo in Puerto Rico. The clip, which was originally posted by Roberto Rivera, has since gone viral. It’s garnered over 10,000 views and more than 500 comments.
Check it out below.
In a repost of the video from Telemundo, they called the scene a “dangerous sea: waves reach 20 feet. A newscaster added:
“A citizen captured footage of the dangerous surf at Puerto Nuevo beach in Vega Baja. Citizens are urged to stay out of the water as the currents will continue this Tuesday.
“Obviously there’s impact of erosion on the coast…the risk of coastal floods occurs. [It’s] important to stay. We have seen fatalities…a lot of caution…stay out of the water.”
It’s not unusual to see large surf in the Caribbean this time of year. Wintertime is typically peak season for waves in the region, and Puerto Rico, particularly. But this swell is something different, angry even. And the usual surf zone for PR is on the west coast of the island, in the region of Rincón. But this scene at Puerto Nuevo is on the northern flank of the island.
Rivera added: “The sea continues to reclaim its space, as clearly seen in these images recorded during the strong swells of Monday, February 9, 2026, at Puerto Nuevo Beach in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. The waves behind the rocky outcrop known as the Dead Sea were 14 feet high, but when they crashed furiously against the rock, they reached 20 feet and perhaps even more on some occasions.”
Ten cuidado, amigos.
