Bali is one of the most trafficked tourism destinations in the world, raking in a whopping 6.3 million visitors in 2024 alone. And some of those travelers, during their stay on the “Island of the Gods,” find themselves in trouble. Danger, to be more exact.
Whether it’s the chaotic traffic, the bedlam of scooters weaving wildly through the roads, being robbed by gang-like monkeys, partying too hard in Canggu, or…getting caught by rogue waves slamming the swell-laden Indonesian province and nearby islands.
As for the latter, see below.
The video, as reposted from the account above, is captioned: “This was one of the biggest swells ever registered. Stay safe.”
Tough to actually validate such a claim, but recently, Bali did see some significant swell during the specialty tube-riding event, the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang, which was won by two teenage locals, Westen Hirst and Jasmine Studer, in pumping conditions on the Bukit Peninsula. However, the video above comes from elsewhere.
Like the one below, showing the chaos from the extremely popular, yet notoriously dangerous tourist destination, Angel’s Billabong, on the nearby island of Nusa Penida. In that clip, tourists scatter frantically as extra-large waves pummel the cliffs.
Not too long ago, a social media influencer was visiting that same spot, posing for a selfie, when a rogue wave nearly took her out. “What started as a serene, fun moment turned into one of the scariest experiences of my life,” she scribed following the near-death experience. “At first, I laughed it off (you know, after my soul returned to my body), but learning that over a dozen tourists have actually died at this spot? That hit hard.”
As for the second clip above, the caption reads: “Recent high swells at Angel’s Billabong, Nusa Penida. People don’t learn from the past, ey?”
That, coupled with all the boat disasters in Bali recently, better stay safe out there.
