Lower Trestles is one of, if not the, most crowded surf spots in California. Maybe even the world. It’s up there, for sure, with flocks of surfers ranging from old-timer longboarders, to hotshot pros, to homeschooled grommets – all vying for their share of the famed cobblestone A-frame peak.
One way to skip the crowd? Paddle out at 4:00am.
That’s what Kolton Sullivan, a surfer from San Clemente, did recently thanks to an illuminated surfboard designed by local shaper Rick Rock. And by the looks of it, despite bearing resemblance to an aquatic UFO sighting, the board went surprisingly well with the extra hardware.
It’s not the first glowstick surfboard, nor the first attempt at night surfing – not even close. But this thing is something else, almost otherworldly. The design looks like a spaceship, or a piece of art, more so than a traditional surfboard. Still, it ripped. Begs the question: more light-up surfboards to come?
The YouTube clip above explains: “The first fully illuminated surfboard made by Rick Rock from Southern California (@RickRock7) Instagram- @rickrock1966 a successful surfboard shaper and all around craftsmen. The clips are from a trip we made down to Lower Trestles at 4am to see how it would all look on camera and we were stoked on the outcome.”
Speaking with Surfline, who captured Kolton riding the incandescent stick, Rick Rock explained the motive behind shaping the board, without giving away any secrets:
“You know, I’ve been down here in the ghetto since 1982. I shape all day, every day. Anyway, I worked in aerospace for a little bit, making composite parts for SpaceX. I learned some skills. Then came back to shaping boards full-time. I figured I’d use some of my skillsets to build an illuminated surfboard. So, I’ve been working on it for several years, and finally got one that works.”
That’s one way to beat the crowds.
