A few years back, during a summer trip to Hawaii, I was catching knee-high rollers on the North Shore of Oahu at Turtle Bay. The lineup was thin, mostly beginners. And then comedy superstar Bert Kreischer paddled out. Proud to say I dropped in on ol’ Bert.
And it appears that Bert’s buddy, Tom Segura, whom they co-host the “2 Bears, I Cave” podcast is an adult-learner surfer as well. But Tom seems to be a little more aggressive in the water than his funnyman fellow, as evidenced by a recent, separate podcast.
During a recent episode of “Your Mom’s House,” which Tom hosts with his wife, Christina P., the former talked about a recent brawl he got in while surfing.

The above, of course, is a reposting of the pod segment from surfing’s own funnyman, Sterling Spencer. But here’s how the tale goes, according to Segura.
“I got into a surf fight,” Tom says. “It was over a wave. I was going to take a wave, and this guy was like, ‘that’s mine.’ I go, ‘what’re you talking about?’ I go to paddle out to it, and he flipped out. He pulled out a switchblade.”
Exaggeration? Likely. Anyway, it continues:
“He swung at me with it. Scraped the side of my face. I hit him. I don’t think he surfed away. He kind of floated for a minute, and then I left.”
His wife jumps in: “He could be dead?”
Segura: “I guess. I didn’t see anything in the paper. He had his switchblade in his shorts.”
As recently covered right here on SURFER Mag, some think the crowds and the lack of etiquette in the lineup has gotten out of hand. Like Koa Rothman and Nathan Florence discussing a nightmare session in which the unspoken rules were blatantly broken.
Well, for what it’s worth, I’m glad it wasn’t Tom Segura I wasn’t snaking at Turtle Bay a few years back. Bert Kreischer, on the other hand, just let it happen.
