It’s an inherent human compulsion. Like the satisfaction of stopping the microwave one second before it ends just to avoid the beep…and feel like a bomb has been diffused.

Humans universally like going under or over things – whether it’s spreading one’s legs over a parking cone, ducking beneath a tree branch, etc. Entire Olympic sports (pole vaulting) and party games (the limbo) have been created out of this simple, collective impulse.

And so, when the rare, once-every-six-years beach formed at the iconic “Arch” in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, professional skimboarder and soft-top aficionado Blair Conklin took the opportunity to do what humans do: go under it. Watch below.

Captioning the video, Conklin wrote:

“One of the most elusive beaches we have ever stepped foot on. This beach only exists after a very particular swell event that moves sand below the iconic El Arco of Cabo San Lucas. This stretch of sand that forms at The Arch is the southernmost point of Baja that you can walk on. This is one of the most awe-inspiring beaches that I have ever stepped foot on.

"The power of the ocean makes you feel really, really small here. When you stand next to an Arch and a Sea Cave towering over head, you can't help but imagine the immense water forces that goes in to creating them. It is here, on that small stretch of sand where you can get up close a personal to rock structures that have been carved by the ocean for 1000s or maybe millions of years.”

For most people, The Arch of Cabo San Lucas is most often only seen via boat or from their hotel rooms nestled inside the bay, sipping margaritas. But for Conklin, who is a regular in Cabo, visiting a couple times a year, skimming through The Arch is a novelty feat for the ages.

“This is a very special spot,” Conklin says. “Probably the most iconic beach in Mexico. But usually, it’s not a beach. This only happens about once every six years…maybe less frequently. So, this is a very special thing to see.”
