Australia is a notoriously sharky continent, with reportedly over 170 species inhabiting its vast coastline, but predominantly great whites, tiger, and bull sharks.

So, sightings – and sadly, attacks – are not uncommon.

Like this video below. It shows a shiver of sharks feasting on a buffet of bait fish, right off the coast of the famed Bondi Beach, outside of Sydney, Australia. Swimmers are nearby during the feeding frenzy, and local lifeguards warned them to keep their distance.

Captioning the drone video clip, news.com.au wrote:

“A tight bait ball drew several sharks close to Bondi, with drone footage showing the predators corralling baitfish as surf lifesavers warned swimmers and surfers to give the area a wide berth.”

Unfortunately, the Sydney area recently saw a rash of shark attacks. Four people were attacked by bull sharks in the span of 48 hours. It was suspected that the rampage was due to rains, and as a result, murky waters off the coastline.

In the most tragic attack, 12-year-old Nico Antic passed away after he was jumping off a rock in a Sydney suburb when he was attacked. His family released a statement:

“We are heartbroken to share that our son, Nico, has passed away. Nico was a happy, friendly, and sporty young boy with the most kind and generous spirit. He was always full of life and that’s how we’ll remember him.”

During another incident, 27-year-old Andre de Ruyter was surfing when he was attacked. He ended up losing his leg following the encounter. In an update following the attack, de Ruyter’s mother provided a statement:

“We would like to express our gratitude to all the brave first responders to our son Andre relating to the shark attack at Manly Beach yesterday,” she told the Manly Observer. “Andre de Ruyter, our compassionate, talented musician, graphic artist and lover of surfing has been placed in a stable condition with wonderful attentive medical staff.”

Meanwhile, the World Surf League just wrapped their Australian leg. A 6.5-foot shark was spotted in the lineup at Snapper Rocks during the Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro, forcing a cease in competition during a heat between Caity Simmers and Vahine Fierro.

Keep an eye out – and maybe your toes up – whilst surfing in Australia.
