Surfers get caught inside all the time. A typical session is going down, then out of nowhere, a bomb looms on the horizon, sweeping away anything in its path.
But in the following scenario, it wasn’t the surfers that got worked by a sneaker set wave. It was the boat that ferried the surfers to the spot. The footage, according to the socials that posted it comes from Fiji, and an account featuring a plethora of boat fails with the tagline: “Expose, Educate, Entertain.” This clip, it appears, speaks to the latter two.
Check out the carnage below.
“Bad day in Fiji,” the caption reads. “Dropped off a few surfers when he saw a window. Next set rolled in fast, and it was too late.”
The boat driver finds himself in a pickle. A wave, incoming, with not much room to run away. The driver thinks he sees a window, a small gap in the cresting wave, and he goes for it. But, like the caption mentions, it was a tad too late. The boat gets clipped by the lip, sending it toppling in the whitewash. Ocean: 1; Boat: 0.
In the aftermath, it’s a total yard sale in the whitewash. The boat canopy has collapsed. Life jackets and gear float aimlessly in the washing machine. And the driver bobs near his capsized vessel, looking dumbfounded. At least, by the looks of it, he seems okay.
In a place like Fiji, with most of the waves breaking offshore at reefs surrounding the archipelago, the use of boats is crucial. But, of course, the captains must be ready for whatever happens, when it comes to dealing with mother nature.
Not saying this guy wasn’t qualified; it happens to the best of ‘em.
Oh yeah, and stay tuned to the WSL Finals, happening August 27-September 4. But don’t expect any boat wipeouts there – this poor fella was (hopefully) an anomaly.
