Of the myriad wave pools and surf parks on the market today, Surf Lakes out of Australia is one of the most visually-appealing, aesthetically-peculiar technologies to date. A massive, steampunk rust-colored plunger, displacing water, vapor coming out the top, and waves breaking in 360 degrees.
Now, with one pool already in Mulara, Queensland, the tech is coming to the United States.
Per a report from That’s So Tampa:
“Tampa Bay is riding the wave of excitement with the announcement of Peak Surf Park, a massive surf-focused attraction planned for Pasco County. Tony Miller, the visionary behind the project, secured a land agreement within Two Rivers, a 6,000-acre master-planned development. The park is set to transform the region with its blend of surf culture, entertainment, and lifestyle amenities.
“After nearly two years of searching for the ideal location, Miller locked in 35 acres in Two Rivers. Located in central Pasco County, this spot gives Peak Surf Park easy access to residents across Tampa Bay and West Central Florida’s coast. The park is scheduled to open in late 2027, promising world-class waves and unforgettable experiences.”
Now, as mentioned before, Surf Lakes is unlike any other pool out there. For more on the technology, here’s how the wave works:
“The Central Wave Device (CWD) or ‘plunger’ displaces water to create concentric swell lines. Surf Lakes uses a hydraulic/pneumatic system to lift and drop the CWD. Compressed air is pushed through a ‘U-Tube’ to lift the CWD, before releasing the air pressure and dropping it into the lake.
“This process takes about six seconds and is repeated multiple times to create a ‘set’ of waves. After each set, the compressed air recharges for the next set.”
As for the Florida Surf Lakes location, there’s still a lot of work to do. The potential open date is some time in 2027 so, yeah, don’t hold your breath. Learn more about Peak Surf Park here.
