For all the skateboarders out there, this might ring a bell: After school in the cul-de-sac, a true test of trust and skill, a handful of neighborhood kids lie down on the ground, as someone ollies over them.
It might seem like a very skating-specific phenomenon. However, as wave pools continue to blur the lines between the two worlds of skating and surfing, specifically in the air, the feat has now been recreated on a surfboard. German surfer by way of Costa Rica, Leon Glatzer, just aired over not one, but five, humans in Endless Surf’s 02 Surftown Muc wave pool in Munich, Germany. See below.
I first encountered Glatzer in El Salvador. It was in the leadup to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, surfing’s inaugural appearance in the Games, and Glatzer had just qualified to represent Deutschland. Born in Hawaii to German parents, at a young age, Glatzer moved to Costa Rica where the goofy-footer tailored his style on the long, groomed pointbreak of Pavones. But his surfing always had an extra flair – one geared towards the air. Even at Pavones, where drawn-out turns are customary, he would find a ramp. Glatzer ended his Olympic campaign with an equal 17th place, while sporting the German flag.
And today, he continues to champion German surfing, especially with the new addition of the 02 Surftown Muc wave pool, powered by Endless Surf, in Munich. The pool has sparked much attention from the surf park world, with new iterations coming soon the United States and beyond.
Regarding the tech, here's Endless Surf: “From beginner to the pro and everyone in between, Endless Surf wave pools produce surf sessions for all skill levels thanks to our Swell Studio operating platform. Wave creation and programming is an artform with Swell Studio, meaning that surfers can dream up nearly any wave and operators can create that wave section by section by controlling height, speed, and angle…Barrels, A-frames, air sections, longboard waves, and whitewash for beginners, can easily be created at the push of a button.”
As for the air, chalk it up to another first in the brave new world of wave pools.
