Tragedy struck a small surf enclave in central Chile on February 24th, when a surfer and influencer was in the water, minding her own business, and a fishing boat came roaring into shore, running over the surfer in the process. The surfer, Javiera Ortiz, died from her injuries. She was 34 years old.
Video footage of the incident has been circulating on social media, and while it’s not necessarily graphic in nature at first glance, it does show the moment that Ortiz was struck by the boat, and later died from her injuries. See the video below; although, of course, viewer discretion advised.
In a statement from the Club de Surf Rinconada de Taucú, translated to English, they said:
“With deep sorrow, we announce that a surfer has died in an accident on Rinconada de Taucü beach, Cobequecura today. The surfing community and locals are mourning this tragic loss.
“According to records, the surfer was hit by a boat, which caused her death.
“Authorities are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident to determine responsibility and prevent future incidents.”
Ortiz was a Chilean local, an avid knitter and surfer, and had a substantial following of over 63k folks on social media. Reportedly, soon after the incident happened, she was scheduled to get married.
The incident also sparked a debate surrounding surfers versus fishing boats, who has the right of way, who is in the wrong, et cetera. Palmira Bastías, president of the local fishing union, said:
“Surfers are very stubborn, the boats give all the signals, they go around and around in order for them to see the boat, but they ignore everything, and unfortunately when they see a wave they ride it, they don’t care if the boat is coming to ground, they just ride it… in this case the fisherman didn’t see anything, the fisherman who is driving on a wave can’t possibly see a person in the water, but they can see the boat because the boat is huge compared to theirs, but they don’t respect anything.”
In either case, Ortiz’s death is nonetheless tragic. And likely one that could’ve been avoided.
Here’s more from the local surf club:
"This accident has generated shock and sadness in the community, and has reminded us of the importance of taking extreme precautions in aquatic activities. Surfers and crew are urged to respect safety regulations and be aware of their surroundings to avoid accidents.
"In this time of grief, we send our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased surfer. May you find comfort and strength to overcome this difficult situation.
"The surfing community reaffirms its commitment to safety in the water and requests that there be a substantive improvement in the procedures for entering and exiting boats into the sea. May this tragic accident serve as a call to reflection and prevention to avoid future losses."
Rest in peace, Javiera Ortiz.
