At roughly 8pm on Sunday, May 26 at San Clemente's very popular T-Street, surfer Evan Garcia was thrown off his board when a suspected Great White shark hit him from below. While his board suffered bite marks, Garcia was uninjured, and luckily able to jump on his board and sprint paddle safely to shore.
One week later, just down the coast in Del Mar, a swimmer was hit by another suspected white shark while training roughly 100 yards offshore from the Beach Safety Center at 17th Street.
According to the city of Del Mar, "The victim was reportedly in a group of about a dozen ocean swimmers who meet regularly to train in Del Mar. A city official said lifeguards witnessed a swimmer helping another swimmer and responded to the area, not yet realizing someone had been bitten.
"Once back on land, he had visible bites to the torso, left arm and hand. The injured man was transported by ambulance to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. City officials said his injuries are not considered life-threatening."
Late spring and early summer bring juvenile white sharks closer to shore, and so it's historically around this time of year when the sightings tick up. Especially considering everyone has a drone these days, and Surfline has eyes on the ocean 24 hours every day.
Still, attacks in Southern California are still extremely rare. So, for there to be two in two weeks, and less 50 miles apart, is certainly disconcerting.
According to this news article, "Shark lab technicians from Cal State Long Beach returned to Del Mar Beach Monday morning. They went out on a surf boat with lifeguards to collect water samples in an effort to figure out what type of shark it was that attacked the man and whether it’s still around.
“Del Mar Beach is a nursery habitat for juvenile white sharks and agitation site meaning we have a few individuals that persist here for long periods of time.”
Is this a one off run of bad luck for Southern California shark attacks, or a sign of things to come?
We certainly hope it's the former.
