The waiting period for the 2025 World Surf League’s Finals Day is officially open.

Sometime between August 27th and September 4th, two new world champions will be crowned in the last iteration of the experimental, and monumental, shift to the Championship Tour, the Final Five format. The question now is…when? Also…where?

All 10 surfers (five men, five women) have landed in Fiji, and are awaiting the call on Tavarua Island. And while the weather and waves have been a bit wonky before the kickoff to the Finals Day window, there’s something brewing on the South Pacific horizon.

In the latest update from the WSL, they’re eyeing a potential “swell of the year” for the tail end of the competition waiting period. However, it’s not the typical, double overhead, cranking Cloudbreak swell; Restaurants is a seriously viable option at this point.

“This swell, right now on paper, it is a perfect swell for Restaurants,” said WSL deputy commissioner Renato Hickel. “We’re informing the surfers, obviously we’re going to be monitoring the swell, and as it gets closer we will trigger a Yellow Alert 24 hours before the competition day.”

And when might that be?

“This swell alert will most likely be on September 1st at 8:00am (Fiji time),” Renato continued. “And then, if everything goes to plan, on the 2nd we should start the event, and hopefully crown world champions that day.”

As we previously reported, there have been whispers of potentially making the move to Restaurants previously. Jojo Roper – San Diego big wave surfer, who is currently stationed on Tavarua – noted:

“I see 9/2 being the biggest day of surf. Weird numbers for Cloudbreak but plenty of energy to make some serious chunk. Great Restaurants numbers, too, but I personally wanna see big barrels and carnage…Restaurants will be perfect. Wave machine perfection. Nice little tubes and rippable lip bash city! Mellow tides, too, so could add to the consistency of perfection.

“It’s a tough call! But what’s funny is, no matter what the forecast says, this place shows us what it wants to do every swell… and always has windows of pumping Cloudbreak…very funny place to forecast.”
