Back in July, a trio of teenagers in Laguna Beach became heroes.

The three local surfers – Mason Davis (16) Levi Mauga (19) and Tommy Zahalka (15) – were on the shore at Treasure Island Beach, beneath the luxury Montage Resort, when they noticed a family in the water, struggling against a dangerous rip current.

So, the boys jumped in the water to rescue the distressed swimmers. And it was all caught on camera.

The rescue occurred around 7:41pm on July 18th. But recently, during a Laguna Beach City Council meeting, the three teens were honored with commemorative medallions for their heroic life-saving actions.

During the City Council meeting, Marine Safety Chief Kai Bond remarked:

“Their early intervention made a significant positive difference in the outcome of this emergency. Thanks to the coordinated efforts between our marine safety team and these courageous young men, all victims were successfully brought back to shore and received the necessary medical care.”

After the incident happened in July, the Laguna Beach Lifeguards released video of the rescue and shared details, which included:

“With the help of three surfers in the water, the guards reached a semi-conscious swimmer who had experienced a non-fatal drowning. While stabilizing that patient, they also located two others in varying degrees of distress.”

Lifeguards, with the help of the teens, safely got the family to the sand, where they continued care. The “semi-conscious” swimmer was transported to Mission Hospital Mission Viejo, “where they arrived conscious and breathing.”

As for the boys, following their heroics, and with a lifeguard academy scheduled tentatively for late December, Chief Bond told them: “Lifeguard tryouts are just around the corner — you guys would be great candidates.”

Good onya, boys.
