Nephophile (noun): A person who loves clouds.

To each their own, whatever floats your boat, but for some folks, the simple joy of looking at the clouds, particularly rare cloud formations, gets their juices flowing.

And recently, two different sightings in Brazil showed some especially unique – and somewhat creepy – cloud formations in the sky, resembling a looming tsunami wave about to crash onto the beach. Check out the first one below:

The video comes from the coastal city of Bertioga in the state of São Paulo, with the caption (as translated) explaining:

“With the approach of a cold front system, it was possible to observe a line of clouds on the coast of São Paulo, where you can identify the warmer air in front of you and the colder air followed by winds.

“Although scary, this line of clouds or storm front serves to show how air moves in the atmosphere when a storm or cold front is moving in.”

Next up, we have another strange cloud formation also from Brazil. This one doesn’t look as much like a wave, but more so like a creepy monster reaching down from the sky.

Again, translated, the caption reads:

“A phenomenon known as roll cloud (or roll cloud) is a rare and impressive type of cloud formation that occurs due to differences in motion and air temperature.

“She is connected to a concept of meteorology called atmospheric instability.

“This is basically how it works:

“When a mass of cold air moves rapidly over an area where the air is warmer and humid, a ‘push’ occurs in the atmosphere. This shock causes hot air to rise and cold air to descend, creating a horizontal rotating motion, as if it were an air cylinder rolling in the sky.

“This continuous movement causes the water vapor to condense, forming that long, tubular, ‘roll’-looking cloud.

“This process also involves another phenomenon called wind shearing, which helps in keeping the cloud rotation.

“Way too awesome!”

Any other nephophiles out there?
