Today, We Celebrate: World Ocean Day

“After a lifetime of filming the natural world, I know understand the most important place on earth is not on land. It’s life at its most mesmerizing. We must open our eyes at what’s happening right now, below the waves.” – Sir David Attenborough from his latest film Ocean.

The legendary broadcaster, historian, author, and humanitarian, now 99 years old, has got a point. And with today being World Ocean Day – in addition to us being surfers, self-styled stewards of the ocean – the occasion comes with some resonance. Sure, there’s World Surfing Day (June 21st, 2025), but without the ocean, and efforts to maintain its well-being, where would surfing be?

So, today, we celebrate. But perhaps more important than cracking beers and toasting to our liquid blue playground, it’s worth looking into ways to sustain a healthy future for the ocean, as it has given so much – whether we’re surfers or not – in return to us as humans, as inhabitants of this world.

“All life began in the deep blue sea,” Attenborough continued. “In this magical world, everything is more connected than we had ever imagined.”

There are countless ways to get involved, many of which are catalogued here. From fundraisers, to beach cleanups, to speaker events, and more. But remember that adage: “Act locally, think globally.” Even going down to your local surf spot, going out for a surf, picking up some trash on the beach afterwards – that’s a way to participate. And who knows? Maybe your act of humble activism will spark others to get involved. Monkey see, monkey do. Positive peer pressure. Etc.

Not to mention, the oceans – perhaps more than ever – are facing uncertain, arguably dire times. Just to name a few factors currently impacting the world’s oceans: Coral reefs are bleaching more than ever right now, and this incoming hurricane season could be the worst ever on record.

To put it simply, the oceans need our help. Any action helps, big or small.

Here at SURFER, we’re proud to be partnering with the crew at Costa Sunglasses for this World Ocean Day. And the folks at Costa are doing their part in helping the oceans, like with their Untangled Collection. Here’s the lowdown on that: “Discarded fishing nets are the most harmful form of plastic pollution in our oceans. In partnership with Bureo, we’re changing that. Made of either 97% or 100% recycled fishing nets, our Untangled collection comes in a variety of lifestyle and performance styles.”

Whether it’s supporting a brand committed to ocean sustainability, getting your hands dirty with a beach cleanup, or simply going for a surf and reveling in the magic that the ocean provides – today (and every day) is a day to celebrate the oceans, the world’s most critical environmental infrastructure.

“If we save the sea, we save our world,” said Attenborough. “The ocean, our final frontier.”
