Sure, wave pools are cool. But what about scoring a perfect wave IRL?
Flying to some far-flung location, hopping on a boat, spending a butt-load of money, and somehow showing up during flawless conditions. Nobody around. Only you and a couple buddies. And nature defying all logic, producing absolute perfection. That kind of payoff outweighs anything the emerging world of manmade surf parks can offer.
And Ridge Lenny, brother of Kai, experienced such a scenario. Where? Top secret. Somewhere in the South Pacific. But you can take a glimpse at it below.
“This is an undisclosed location [in the] South Pacific,” Ridge said. “It’s the most clear water I’ve ever surfed in in my life. Not a breath of wind. This wave breaks over, like, three feet of water, but it looks like it’s six inches because the water is so clear.”
Kai, while reviewing the footage, was gobsmacked at the perfection. It didn’t look real, and so, in his brain, it looked like how surfers have long envisioned the perfect wave. Kai said:
“You just got barreled, and I thought you were done with the wave, and you were going to kick out, but you didn’t. It was like one of those videogames, like Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfer, where you just pull back in and it mechanically barrels around you again.”
And Ridge confirmed the analogy:
“It literally felt like we were playing a videogame. We were going out of body. Every single set did the same thing. You pull in, get barreled, come out, reset, and the thing would barrel again. Heaven must look exactly like that. That’s as good as it gets. I would not change a single thing about that wave.”
Like the textbook drawings all surfers make while daydreaming in school, the wave is flawless. Not a drop of water out of place. Pure perfection. And no manmade pneumatic pumps or wave-making foils in sight; just nature at its very best.
Kai concluded:
“It’s like one of god’s glorious wonders of the earth.”
