Portugal's legendary big wave spot Nazaré changed the game of big wave surfing.
It's where big wave surfers constantly push their limits, making and breaking records.
The video below highlights five of the gnarliest waves ever ridden at the legendary break.
The edit above comes from the YouTube channel, Josh Pomer Surfing. It's captioned:
"Nazaré - TOP 5 BIG WAVES & Dramatic Rescue
"See the top 5 rides ever at Nazare and an extreme wipeout and rescue. 5 insane huge rides by #5 Lucas Chumbo #4 Justine Dupont #3 Kai Lenny Foil Ride #2 Kai Lenny #1 Sebastian Steudtner."
Steudtner, a German big wave surfer, made surfing history in October of 2020 when he made the Guinness World Record for the “Largest Wave (Male)” ever surfed by towing into a massive Nazaré that measured a whopping 86 feet.
Describing the wave to Guinness, Steudtner said:
"It was the first big day of the season and it felt like we started from zero to 100.
"The first thing I thought when we checked the numbers on the forecast was: 'oh sh*t, this is the biggest thing I've ever seen.'
"On the morning of the 29th, there was an extreme uncertainty. What's going to happen now, how will it feel, what will it be like to stand on the board for the first time again after that long break? Then the feeling prevailed that I have waited six months for it, and I was happy to finally surf again.
"I've never experienced so much energy in the waves, I've never been so fast on a surfboard."
