It’s the circle of life. Just like those nature documentaries, narrated by the silky pipes of Sir David Attenborough, in which the brutal side of the natural world is shown. Water buffalo gored by lions, hyenas going after gazelles, crocodiles chomping on hippos. Heavy stuff; nature is gnarly.
As for the ocean, some of the goriest scenes come from sharks. They are, after all, an apex predator. And sadly, it’s not always sharks on other animals that the beatings take place. Sometimes, humans – mostly accidentally – get caught in the crossfire. Shark attacks, most often are a case of mistaken identity. Humans aren’t their preferred choice of food...luckily. Not part of their diet.
One creature often on sharks’ menu, however, are seals. And this clip below shows just how hungry sharks are for seals, and how viciously the attacks can be. Viewer discretion advised.
It’s unclear where the clip comes from, however, some in the comments suggested the Galapagos Islands – a hotspot for shark activity. Regardless of where it is, it is gruesome. The clip comes from the Instagram account, Nature is Metal, a purveyor of the gnarliest attacks nature has to offer.
Here’s what they had to say about it:
“Sea lions are agile in the water, but when a shark is closing in, their best defense is to get out if at all possible, and fast. In this case, most of them made it to the safety of the rocks.
“Sharks are built for this kind of ambush. They patrol coastal waters, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Sea lions know the risk, and their survival depends on reaction time - hesitate for even a moment, and the odds of escape drop dramatically.”
Nature is, in fact, mental.
