Three Australians, one Hawaiian and one Californian commit to an eight-day trip in a postcard-worthy surf setting. Yes, I’m aware surf content from Indonesia isn’t exactly newsworthy. We’ve seen this movie before. And yet, it doesn’t feel wrong to hit repeat.
“Club Tropicana,” a quick 10-minute hit presented by Sun Bum and Wasted Talent, documented five young surfers who each brought their own spice to the tropical heat: Rapidly ascending Aussie talents Hughie Vaughan, Lennix Smit and Milla Coco Brown, Californian shaper Kobe Hughes, and the talented Hawaiian goofyfoot Vaihitimahana Inso. The waves look as fun as waves get, and the crew got after it with their own distinct styles.
For my money, Kobe offered the most unique style here, riding a self-made model and showing the youngsters how to use a longer rail line. Milla, the feisty 17-year-old known for her quick full rotations in the air, looks every bit as aggressive as the guys on her frontside hacks. Hughie and Lennix go blow for blow from barrels to blowtails, as close friends are prone to do. Vahiti, who grew up surfing Ala Moana Bowls, clubs the few lefts that came her way.
The creatives behind this video deserve a nod, too. Wade Carroll, the man behind Idiot Box, Repeater, Saturn, and Strung, filmed and edited the piece. The inimitable water cinematographer Tom Jennings flew out from Western Australia to lend his expertise as well. Last but not least, musician Rick Snowden made an original score that leans club but still offers cruise. “Club Tropicana” has been played before. But I still want in.
