It you ain’t getting tubed at Teahupo’o by the time your seven-years-old, then what’re you even doing? Enter Uriah McDonald, an elementary school student out of Oceanside, CA, who is putting the time in at heavy waves, like Chopes, all before he hits double-digits. Impressive, no?

And even though the waves weren’t massive, and Anchor took a few beatings along the way, see video below, the young upstart is getting his career going early. Earlier than most his peers.

McDonald captioned the clip:

“Packing one and getting the guillotine on 2 at Teahupo’o. Putting in the work

“Thank you @terevadavid for helping me pull into this insane barrel at Teahupo’o!! Much love ”

Having a local legend, like Tereva, in you corner at Chopes, certainly doesn’t hurt.

McDonald is not alone in his elementary school surfing prowess. There’s Brazilian surfer João Vitor, who recently got insanely tubed in a wave pool in his homeland; there’s Australian Sani Hellman, with the extremely apt surname, who charges slabs well beyond his years. (See here and here.)

As for more on McDonald, his budding career spans beyond Tahiti’s heaviest wave. Last year, while still aged six, McDonald won the U7 Surfing Championship in Oceanside, while also competing in the U9 and U10 categories, reaching the podium in the both divisions.

“I love the ocean and it’s my friend forever,” McDonald told Fox 5.

Regarding his early start into surfing, McDonald continued:

“I didn’t really pop up quite yet because I was just 8 months, but I started to like the ocean when I was that age. “I really like it and I hope like it forever, and I will like it forever.”

As for the future for this young surfer?

“I really want to be an athlete and go into the Olympics, so I can get points for our country,” he said. “And make the United States a better place.”

Keep an eye out for this prodigious grom.
