When we hear the word "extinction," plants and animals usually come to mind. Not waves.

But whether it's from Mother Nature or mankind, wave extinction—from California's Dana Point to Mexico's Petacalco, and Hawaii's Pohoiki Bowls and Shacks—is something surfers have mourned time and time again.

In the video below, surfer and YouTuber Dan Harmon sheds light on more waves we're on the verge of losing, and how surfers can help.

In his latest vlog above, Harmon shares a list of beloved surf breaks around the world that are currently facing extinction, including waves in the Maldives, Tahiti, Mexico, Spain, Costa Rica, and even Iceland.

Harmon says that coastal construction projects causing surf spot destruction have been a "constant throughout history" and "either completely bury or drastically alter top surf breaks."

"We’ve all seen the effects such projects can have in other examples of lost waves, but for many of these breaks, it’s not too late," he captioned the video.

Harmon says spreading awareness, signing the petitions listed below, and donating funds are the most effective ways to help preserve the environment and these world-class waves.

He urges viewers:

"Please, like and share this video so we can spread the word and do what we can to save these waves!! Petitions to SAVE these Breaks."
