With Venus Williams marking her return to competition at the Citi Open, she will become one of a handful of active tennis players still competing in their late 40s. Although she makes the list as one of the evergreen veterans, the legendary American is not the oldest player on tour. On that note, let us take a look at the five players who continue to lace up and outlast time.
Top of the list is the oldest active tennis player to have a WTA ranking. American Leslie Rose celebrated her 53rd birthday earlier this season and continues to play tennis at a professional level. She’s been averaging at least one doubles tournament per month since the start of 2025, partnering 18-year-old Madison Rose, who might presumably be someone within her family circle. Leslie is the No. 1645 in women’s doubles with four ranking points.
Toshishide Matsui won a doubles title on the Challenger Tour just two years ago. He fell just short of breaking the record of the oldest ATP player to have a singles ranking when he played and lost his opening match in an ITF tournament in Guam last month. The Japanese man is ranked in the Top 300 in doubles.
Toshihide Matsui is back at the M15 in Harmon (on Guam) this week! In his first event of the season, the 47-year-old tried to get that record for oldest player with a singles ranking and lost in R1, but is into doubles SF with Masakatsu Noguchi.

Venus Williams recently accepted a wild card to compete at the WTA 500 in Washington. The 45-year-old American will play her first match in over a year in singles against Peyton Stearns. Venus is then slated to play in doubles at the event together with compatriot Hailey Baptiste.
Indian tennis legend Rohan Bopanna made history in January 2024 when he became the oldest World #1 at 43. He topped the doubles rankings after reaching the Australian Open men’s doubles final. And after 61 attempts and no fewer than 15 different doubles partners, Bopanna lifted his first Grand Slam men’s doubles title with home player Matthew Ebden in Melbourne. Now 45, Bopanna remains active on the pro tour.
Spain’s David Marrero is a former men’s doubles World No. 5 and has won 14 titles at the highest level in that discipline. He is currently outside the Top 1000, but maintains an active playing career on the ITF, where he has competed in three tournaments in 2025.
